Charles Dickerson
A funeral service for Charles Marshall Dickerson, 84, is scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, at First Methodist Church in Jacksonville with David Hallum and Joe Ballard officiating. He will be laid to rest at Still Waters Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, and family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m.at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Charles Marshall Dickerson was born to Grover Lee and Viola Grimes Dickerson on Sept. 9, 1940, in Frankston. He graduated from Frankston High School and went on to attend Henderson County Jr. College and Sam Houston State University.
On Aug. 12, 1961, he married the love of his life, Judith Ann Gibson. Together, they had three children. His family was what he was most proud of and one of his biggest joys.
Throughout the years, Charles worked diligently with many organizations in Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Jaycees, the Jacksonville Rodeo Assn., and the Jacksonville Rider’s Club just to name a few. The Jacksonville Tops in Texas Rodeo was another one of his biggest joys. He loved the sport of rodeo and loved being a part of what he thought was one of the best rodeos in Texas. You might see him on the back of a horse during the Rodeo Parade or dressed as Santa Claus in the Annual Christmas Parade. He loved doing both. He was a rodeo clown in the early years, a rodeo announcer, auctioneer, a farrier, a salesman, and a general people person. He loved people.
Charles was awarded Jacksonville’s Citizen of the Year in 2006.
Charles was a member of the Shriner’s Mounted Patrol for many years. He was also a Gideon, a member of the Masonic Lodge and an active member and Deacon of Afton Grove Baptist Church.
For many years, he worked in the funeral business. Until he couldn’t any longer, he worked for Autry Funeral Home. Barry and Jana Autry and Ralph Lindsey have no idea how much love and respect he had for them. He was always there with a hug and smile to anyone he saw, especially those who were grieving.
Left to cherish his memory are daughter, Deidre (Dedi) Kyle and husband Jim of Crockett, sons, Chuck Dickerson of Crockett, and Craig Dickerson of Jacksonville, grandchildren, Amanda Pugh and husband, John, Jaimee Mikes and husband Ryan, Kristie Gambill and husband Justin, Cody Kyle and wife Amy, Tanna Ivey, Houston Dickerson, and Jerrod Dickerson. He had 8 great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Also left to cherish his memory are Byron Underwood, Cathy Thompson, and Tonya Sanford whom he loved like his own.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Judy, who passed away in 2022.
A special thanks to The Country Place Senior Living for taking such good care of him. Kim Nolley and her staff treated him like family and for that we will always be grateful. Also, a special thanks to Angel Care Hospice, especially Donna Tenner and Jill for the wonderful care they gave him in his final days.
Pallbearers will be Byron Underwood, Brent Dickson, Jimmy Dickson, Craig Tennison, Pat Kyle, Rickey Moore, Randy Berry, and Kenny Hart.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Diamont, Eddie Smith, Charles Yarbrough, Ralph Jordan, James Yancey, Nick Bruno, Larry McCarroll, John Alexander, Randy Orme, Kent Westbrook, John Hawk, and Billy Bateman.
Rather than customary condolences, the family would like donations made in honor of Charles to be made to The Gideons International at www.gideons.org/donate , Afton Grove Baptist Church, 360 CR 4208, Jacksonville, Texas 75766, or to The Michelle Lynn Holsey Foundation @ www.michellelynnholsey.com .
