Barbara Ann Maupin

Barbara Ann Maupin, age 86, was called home by her Lord peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend.

Barbara Ann Ash was born on March 22, 1934 to Nat and Helen Ash in Dallas, Texas. Her family attended Cockrell Hill Baptist Church and Barbara trusted Jesus as her Savior at summer camp beneath the big cross at the overlook at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Camp. As an only child of working parents, she grew up to be confident, poised, quick-witted, and a hard worker. She worked in her parents’ cafe before and after school and graduated from Sunset High School. She was a beautiful, petite young lady and did some modeling for Neiman Marcus. She was accepted  ato Braniff's Stewardess Training School prior to deciding to get married. Barbara became an excellent secretary and enjoyed working for the AAA, especially when the players for the Dallas Cowboys walked past her desk to reach the Cowboys Office located in the back of her building in those days

Later, she would meet the love of her life, Bob Maupin, at Temco Aircraft Co. where both worked. They married on December 1, 1956. Together, they welcomed and raised two daughters. Raising Nancy and Patti with Bob was the pride of Barbara’s life – creating a home full of love, comfort, and lasting memories. She was the support and encourager as each family member explored a variety of interests in school, church, work, and play - fishing, camping, swimming, school musicals, sewing, piano lessons, baking, and general homemaking. She was President of the Bishop Lynch High School PTA when their daughters attended there.

When Bob retired from UTL in 1993, he and Barbara moved to their dream home in Frankston, Texas, where they enjoyed looking out over Lake Palestine each morning for sunrise coffee. They became actively involved in their church, Frankston United Methodist Church. At the lake, they were frequent hosts of holiday parties with family and friends. She loved to laugh, listen to music, feed and watch birds, go fishing on the White River in Arkansas and vacation in Europe and Alaska. She could carry on a conversation with just about anyone she met.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Nancy Bates and son-in-law Michael, Patricia Riggs and son-in-law Robert; five grandsons Ian, Aaron, Benjamin, Brian, and Peter; her sister-in-law, Mary Duncan and husband Sammy; her niece, Dina; nephew, Clint, and wife Evelyn; great-niece and nephew, Fiona and Oliver; and cousins, Brooks Harkey, Linda Shaw, and Suzanne Mills.

Services for Barbara will be held on May 16, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the Stewart Family Funeral Home Chapel, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy. in Tyler, with Dr. Matt Thomas officiating.

Joan Dungan

Joan Dungan, age 89, passed way on May 20, 2020 at her home in LaRue, Texas. She was born on December 15, 1930 in Athens, Texas to Luther A. and Mabel (Jenks) Norris.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Dungan; her parents, Luther A. Norris and Mabel (Jenks) Norris; her siblings, Lowell Norris, Laverne Anderson and Marilyn Johnson.

Joan was a long-time resident of the LaRue area. She was well known and loved in the community. She was a social worker by trade, helping and caring for many people during that time. She was a loving person who loved her family, neighbors and church family dearly. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her sons, Melvin Dungan and wife Creta, Dana Dungan and wife Cheryl; her grandchildren, Melanie Mekalip and husband Greg, Keith Dungan and wife Lydia, Beth Bragdon and husband Justin; her great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Makenna, Garrett and Cooper; her niece, Anita Shell and husband Rick and son Cory.

Open visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2020 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. There will be private burial at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Athens.

James (Jim) Wilson Haynes

James (Jim) Wilson Haynes, 90, of Athens, Texas passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020 after a brief illness.

He was born on a very cold Jan. 6, 1930 in the family home near LaRue, Texas. His parents were Anthony and Lillie (Alexander) Haynes.

He is survived by the love of his life and Square Dance partner, Gwyn Haynes; two sons, Raymond Haynes and wife, Lisa of Oceanside, California and Steven Haynes of Corsicana, Texas; brother-in-law, Square Walker, sister-in-law, Gayle Haynes, numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Lillie Haynes, a daughter, Leslie Ann Haynes and ten siblings and spouses, Mildred & Weldon Landers, Frances & Jimmy Hall, Thomas and Laura Haynes, Lee & Bernice Chapman, Alice and Jimmy Baggerman, Carrie and Jack Osborn, Julia and Leon Hatter, Jo & Dan Taylor, Frank Haynes, and Hazel Walker.

Jim attended LaPoynor School, LaRue, Texas as a first grade charter student when the school opened in 1936. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy in April 1948, it was “Boot Camp” in San Diego, California followed by some training in Memphis, Tennessee and then to Pensacola, Florida to attend the Naval Photography School for a specialty rating of Aviation Photographer. Through the next several years he advanced to the rating of Aviation Photographers Mate 1st Class with additional assignments at Key West, Florida, Washington D.C., Kami Seya, Japan, and Napa, California.

After nine years of service to the USA, he took an honorable discharge to attend Napa Junior College, Napa, California and Sacramento State College, Sacramento, California. He was employed at Folsom Prison and would often tell people he spent 3 years at Folsom Prison just to see the look on their faces. The next place of employment was the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department from which he retired as a Sergeant-Deputy Sheriff in 1980.

Then it was back to Texas for a retirement where he was past president of Athens Lion Club and very active in the Pea Pickers Square Dance Club.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27, 2020 from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Thursday, May 28th at 10 A.M. at Shelby Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Glenna Lee Martin

Glenna Lee Martin, age 66, was called home by her Lord peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 23, 2020. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

Glenna was born on September 21, 1954 to Glen and Dorothy Martin in Palestine, Texas. Her family moved to Frankston, Texas in 1962. At Frankston High School, Glenna enjoyed playing basketball and running track. As a teenager, Glenna and her sisters worked at their parent’s business, Martin’s Marina on Lake Palestine. Besides working at the marina, she also enjoyed swimming, water skiing, fishing, and boating with friends and family.

After attending Lon Morris College, Glenna moved to Austin where she had the opportunity to learn and become skilled in her chosen career as a professional baker at Green Pastures and Chez Bazan restaurants. When she returned to the East Texas area, Glenna worked as a baker at Nut N Fancy Bakery, Brookshire’s Bakery, and Sadler’s until her illness prevented her from the professional work she loved so much. She worked at Rusk State Hospital until her declining health led to her retirement in 2011.

Glenna was especially known for her multi-layer, intricately decorated wedding cakes. She generously and proudly made the wedding cakes for the weddings of sisters and nieces. Her holiday specialty baking included wonderfully decorated cookies and baklava. She was an exceptional baker and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

Glenna was also an exceptional seamstress. While living in Rusk, she volunteered for the Cherokee Civic Theater and made elaborate costumes for the performances. She enjoyed traveling, once driving across the United States to visit Canada, and traveled to Jamaica, Cozumel, and other destinations for vacation.

Glenna will be remembered for her gregarious, sweet personality and irresistible, Texas sized smile. Throughout her life she never met a stranger and easily engaged others in conversation. She was the sister who was always happy and positive, always taking the time to see that family and those around her were happy, too.

Glenna is survived by her mother, Dorothy Butler Martin, four sisters and their spouses, Barbara and Roy Haws, Patty Price, Mary and Eddie Milham, and Becky and Roy Pemberton. Her surviving nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved and enjoyed include, Kimberly Riley and husband Matt, Jonathan Price and wife Tina, Kristina Wilson and husband Mike, Justin Williams and fiancée Heather Allen, Edward Starling III and wife Amanda, Jason Starling, Jennifer Starling and Daniel Phillips, and many great nieces and nephews. Glenna was preceded in death by her father Glen Ray Martin and brother-in-law Judson Price.

Glenna was baptized in the Frankston United Methodist Church where she continued to keep her membership. Due to continuing public health related issues, a memorial for Glenna will be held later. She will be interred at Cedar Creek Cemetery, Bastrop County, in the Martin family plot.
