Dovie Dickerson

ATHENS — Funeral services for Dovie D. Dickerson, 99, of Athens were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Athens with the Rev. Richard Huffman officiating.

Burial was in Poynor Cemetery under direction of Gordon-Foster-Brown Funeral Home, Athens.

Mrs. Dickerson died Thursday, July 28, in Athens.

She was born July 7, 1906 in Temple to Jessie and Lillie Jane Henderson Denney.

Mrs. Dickerson was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Poynor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucious Dickerson.

Survivors include her daughter, Nellie J. Pickering of DeSoto; sons, L.D. Dickerson of Frankston and Nealy Dickerson of Palestine; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Lee Dickerson, Jay Boles, Ross Dickerson, Bobby Lane Tarrant, Tyler Dickerson and Dane Rolins.

Jose and Ruth Garcia

NECHES — Memorial services for Jose Garcia, 46, and Ruth Garcia, 41, both of Neches, were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at First Baptist Church of Neches with the Rev. Charles Grasty officiating.

Private graveside services were held Thursday, July 28, at the Neches Cemetery under the direction of Autry Funeral Home of Jacksonville.

Mr. Garcia died Sunday, July 24, at Lake Palestine.

Mrs. Garcia died Tuesday, July 26, in Tyler.

Mr. Garcia worked in the oilfield industry and Mrs. Garcia worked in retail sales. They were Baptists.

Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Solis Garcia; and a brother, Guadalupe Garcia.

Mrs. Garcia was preceded in death by her father, James Morrison Sr.

The couple is survived by a daughter, Samantha Gallardo of Neches; and their foster children.

Mr. Garcia also is survived by his father, Gerardo Garcia Sr. of Neches; a brother, Gerardo Garcia Jr. of Neches; and sisters, Connie Rayburn of Magnolia, Ark and Lisa Montgomery of Oklahoma.

Mrs. Garcia also is survived by her mother, Christean Morrison of Dequincy, La.; brothers, Johnny J. Morrison of Evergreen, Colo. and James H. Morrison Jr. of Bridge City; and sisters, Fayra Rath, Sherry Burgess and Tabatha Hayes, all of Dequincy.

Riley Paige (Peanut) Henderson

Funeral services for Riley Paige (Peanut) Henderson, three weeks old, of Frankston were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Frankston Assembly of God with Rev. J.A. Griffin officiating.

Burial was in the Frankston City Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Frankston.

The infant died Wednesday, Aug. 3, at her residence.

She was born July 9, 2005 in Palestine. She was affiliated with the Frankston Assembly of God.

Survivors include her mother, Krystal Dee Ann Henderson of Frankston; a brother, Robert Reece Fields of Frankston; a sister, Lauren Kennedy Fields of Frankston; grandparents, Brenda Henderson and Robert and Sheila Fields, all of Frankston; great-grandparents, Lillie Fields of Richmond, James and Mary Donahue of Jacksonville, Norma Hamby of Frankston, John and Karen Hamby of Riverside; a Godfather, Mark Ewing of Frankston; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Billy Jack Adams

Funeral services for Billy Jack Adams, 75, of Frankston were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Frankston with Rev. J.A. Griffin officiating.

Burial was in the Frankston City Cemetery.

Mr. Adams died Sunday, Aug. 14, in Tyler. He was born Aug. 2, 1930 in Frankston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Lacy Adams; a son, Billy Dan Adams in 1993; a brother, Boyd Adams in 2004; and a sister, Estella Henderson in 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Adams of Frankston; daughters, Suzanne Miller and Lisa Tippett, both of Frankston; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Elaine Adams of Frankston; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; aunts, Maybelle Adams of Chandler and Eva Smith of Frankston; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Johnny Nolen, Danny McCoy, David Harrell, David Makuehan, Thad Miller and Johnny Wheeler.

Rebecca L. Bryans

Funeral services for Rebecca L. Bryans, 27, of Athens were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Frankston Assembly of God with Rev. J.A. Griffin officiating.

Burial was at the Wofford Cemetery near Frankston.

Services were under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Frankston.

Miss Bryans died on Monday, Aug. 15, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 30, 1977 in Charlottesville, Va.

Miss Bryans was a student and a member of Assembly of God.

She was preceded in death by her step father, Raymond Scheideman.

Survivors include her mother, Genelda Scheideman of Athens; a brother, Jonathan Bryans of North Carolina; her grandmother, Nelda Melton of Frankston; an aunt, Renee Herring of Rowlett; an uncle, Frank Nelson of Frankston; cousins, James and Chris Herring of Rowlett; her father, Albert Bryans of Va.; special friends, including Jason Daley of Orange.

Pallbearers were James Herrin, Chris Herrin, Phillip Warren, Harold Henderson. Ronnie Henderson and Brian Barcalow.

Ellen Margurette Dabbs

PALESTINE — Funeral services for Ellen Margurette Dabbs, 95, of Palestine were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Herrington/Land of Memory Chapel in Palestine with Dr. Stephen Holcombe officiating.

Burial was at Dabbs Cemetery south of Frankston.

Mrs. Dabbs died Monday, Aug. 8, at her home.

She was born May 21, 1910 to Ollie and Milo Weaver in Corine near Jacksonville. She married Audrey Dabbs on Dec. 4, 1926 in Frankston.

Mrs. Dabbs was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Palestine and the Order of Eastern Star No. 1113 in Frankston.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Thornton of Palestine and Pattye Mitchell of Arlington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four sisters, Gladys Taylor and Amilee Lockhart, both of Quitman, Dorothy Jones of North Richland Hills and Juanita Toppings of Dallas; one brother, Milo Weaver of Quitman; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were grandson Michael Mitchell, Joe Ellis, Erwin Dabbs, Howard Woods, Dennis Butler, grandson Bryan Thornton, Joe Nash and grandson-in-law John Scott.

Honorary pallbearers were men of the Adult 8 Sunday School Class at Southside Baptist Church.

Contributions may be made to Southside Baptist Church or Hospice of East Texas.

Jack Sheehan

PALESTINE — Masonic gravside services for John F. “Jack” Sheehan, 84, of Palestine, were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mr. Sheehan died Saturday, Aug. 13, at a hospice in Tyler.

He was born May 17, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., to Albert G. and Christine Marie Schnatzmeyer Sheehan.

Mr. Sheehan was reared in St. Louis and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and served 46 years with Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. He was a member of the Palestine Masonic Lodge 31, AF&AM.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Steven Sheehan of Frankston in 2004; and a brother, A.E. Sheehan.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth J. “Betty” Sheehan of Palestine; two daughters, Janet and her husband Jim Guidry of Texas City, and Joan Grimes of Palestine; a daughter-in-law, Jennie Sheehan of Frankston; a sister, Alice Koch of St. Louis; and two grandchildren.

Masons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas or to the American Cancer Society.

Janne House Van Winkle

Memorial services for Janne House Van Winkle, 49, of Austin were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home in Austin.

Mrs. Van Winkle died Thursday, Aug. 11.

She was born April 13, 1956 in Rockdale, daughter of J.C. and Pat (Dickerson) House. She was baptized at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, Rockdale, at a young age.

She graduated from Lanier High School in Austin.

Mrs. Van Winkle attended the University of Houston and was an accountant/comptroller for Five Star Produce.

Survivors include her husband, John Van Winkle of Austin; a daughter, Jennifer Ingram of Austin; her mother, Pat House of Frankston; brother, Jackie House of Austin; a niece, Julie and Benjy Shattle; a great-niece and nephew, MiKayla and Kyle; John’s children, Colt and Matt Van Winkle and Matt’s wife Tiffany and grandson, Keith; and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

George Tipton Jr.

Funeral services for George Tipton Jr., 79, of Frankston were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Frankston with Rev. J.A. Griffin and Rev. Doug Howell officiating.

Burial was at Frankston City Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Mr. Tipton was born Sept. 18, 1925 in Beaumont to George Tipton Sr. and Augusta Pitts Tipton.

He died on Sunday, Aug. 21, at his residence.

Mr. Tipton graduated from East Texas Teachers College with three master’s degrees in physics, education, and mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in physics.

He joined his father at Henderson County Junior College in 1948 through 1971, teaching physics, drafting and surveying and served as sponsor of the Beginning Engineers Club.

Mr. Tipton was a member of the National Mathematics Assn. of America. He also owned and operated Tipton Electric, owning distribution rights for Carrier products for the East Texas area for several years.

He served in the United States Navy and was a 50-year member of the Wm. Foster Masonic Lodge, serving as Worshipful Master and District Deputy.

Mr. Tipton was an election judge for the Frankston ISD and was one of the organizers of the Frankston Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief. He served several years on the Frankston City Council.

He married Lella Mae McKee on Nov. 25, 1948, Thanksgiving Day.

Mr. Tipton is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lella Tipton of Frankston; a daughter, Mickye Sue Strother and husband, Wayne of Manvel; a son, Randy Tipton and wife, Virginia of Cedar Hill; grandchildren, Christie Tipton, Scott Tipton and Jared Strother; a sister, Janet Clayton of Poynor; a sister-in-law, Wanda Tipton of Grand Junction, Colo.; nephews, Dennis Clayton of Katy, Scott Ray Tipton of Washington; a niece, Judy Ray of Houston; and a very special friend, John M. (Bo) Lookabaugh.

Pallbearers were former students: Joey Maxwell, Jerry Jones, Jim Smith, Thomas Cook, Johnny Burks and Dennis Clayton.

Honorary pallbearers were John M. Lookabaugh, J.D. Carter, Hugh Reynolds, R.E. Phillips, Marshall Ellis, Herbert Riley, Tony Herrington and Jerry Beard.
